The Rega DAC

The master of good value/ high performance analog equipment, and also maker of several musical sounding CD players, the UK-based Rega now has a 24/192 DAC with USB input for GBP498.

The DAC utilizes Wolfson's digital receiver with its own power supply feeding a pair of Wolfson WM8742 DAC in parallel, which are driven via a buffer stage. The output amplifier employs a discrete differential multiple feedback filter and output amplifier, with a high cut-off frequency for use with higher sample rates. No sample rate converter and process the data at the incoming sample rate which keeps the signal processing to a minimum. Jitter was minimised by synchronously clocking the digital data with a phase lock loop.

There are 5 user-selectable digital filter, which are:
Linear phase soft-knee filter

  1. Minimum phase soft-knee filter
  2. Linear phase brickwall filter
  3. Minimum phase apodising filter
  4. Linear phase apodising filter
Number 4 seems to be very interesting if it sounds anything like Meridian's advance minimum phase apodising filer which eliminate pre-ringing with low phase shifts as implemented in its top-of-the-line 808.3 CD player.

All the capacitors associated with the analogue signal path are Nichicon FG bypassed with MMK polyester capacitors, and low impedance conductive polymer capacitors are used for DAC decoupling. The power supply utilizes a toroidal transformer, fast rectifier diodes and again Nichicon FG capacitors. There is a power supply for the control microcontroller, separate from the digital & analogue audio stages. Special attention being paid to the inter IC control signals ensuring the control data noise is kept to a minimum
