Rotel RA-1570

Two years ago a DAC featuring an asynchronous USB input was news.
Today, a DAC without async USB is news and as far as I am concerned, a showstopper.

In the amplifier world, async USB input is still rare.
Rotel is one of the exceptions to this rule.
I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple of years a USB input is as common as a RCA.

47 Labs Midnight Blue 4733 Preamp/DAC

The second product from the new Midnight Blue entry level range from Japan's 47 Laboratory (first one being a tuner).  47 Labs' philosophy is very zen with a motto like "Only the simplest can accomodate the most complex".  Short signal path, low component counts, etc. Their simple but innovative products are probably the most imitated in the DIY circles.  Gaincard are copied as Gainclones, Shigaraki transport are being re-built from Sanyo boom boxes and affectionately called "Shigaclones".  They also make uber expensive and technologically out-of-the-box products too, such as the upside down laser PiTracer transport, and the twin contra-rotating Koma turntable.

Model 4733 has 2W output onboard, meaning it can drive small computer speakers without additional power amp. It is an active pre-amplifier with USB and coaxial digital inputs plus 2 x RCA analog inputs.
  • Inputs : Coaxial, USB, Line 1, Line2
  • Out puts : 1x Speaker, 1x Headphone, RCA Jack
  • Output power 2W/ Ch. at 8 ohm

Classe CP-800 preamp/processor

Classe Audio of Canada recently announced a new stereo preamp/processor which seems to be the jack-of-all-trades. As a purist preamp, it has a pure analog pass-through that bypasses all the digital circuitry over its five analog inputs (2 x XLR, 3 x RCA).  For us digital buffs, there is also a DAC (using Wolfson WM8741 32-bit/192kHz chip), with asynchronous USB input (up to 24/96). For computer audiophiles, it can stream music via Ethernet with uPnP and DLNA protocols. For the kids, theres an iPod digital connection. There are of course the usual comprehensive digital inputs (coax, Toslink, AES/EBU) and also an HDMI 2-channel input. That's not all - it has parametric EQ, bass management with digital crossover, multi rooms, multiple outputs capabilities over its balanced and unbalanced outputs. It even has a dedicated headphone preamp for late nights. Available now for US$5,000 which is pretty darn good judging from everything it does along with its classy designs and seemingly excellent ergonomics.

The Classe CP-800 Stereo Preamplifier/Processor is said to be the first of a new generation of stereo preamplifiers designed to take full advantage of today's high resolution digital sources. The CP-800 offers new digital processing features including optimal asynchronous USB and full support of Apple's iPod®, iPhone® and iPad® range of products.
In addition to accommodating legacy analog and digital sources, Classe announced that the CP-800 can also optimize playback from computer audio files and portable devices like iPods via USB using asynchronous techniques and proprietary clocking circuits. A storage device like an iPod or computer can contain all the data of the original recording, so it has the potential to be an audiophile source. The challenge is to clock that data into the D-to-A converters at precisely the right time, which the CP-800 achieves through newly-developed recovery and clocking technology.

A new power supply design optimizes the electrical environment for the audio circuitry inside the CP-800 and benefits associated equipment sharing the same AC power. PFC (Power Factor Correction) technology ensures the most efficient operation of the power supply while maintaining a constant load on the AC Mains. The benefit, according to Classe, is that the preamp/processor does not modulate the AC mains as would a conventional linear power supply without PFC. Other system components won't even know it's there.

In addition to superb performance as a digital-to-analog converter and stereo preamplifier, Classe says the CP-800 boasts features like bass management and parametric EQ that heretofore have been lacking in stereo preamps. There is a subwoofer output and two configurable auxiliary channels that can be used to drive additional subs, bi-amp the L&R channels or feed into another room.

Classe points out that a properly implemented subwoofer (or two) is at least as beneficial to stereo playback systems as it is to home theaters. Placing the Left and Right speakers for best stereo imaging rarely delivers ultimate bass response at the listening position, no matter how well those speakers can reproduce low frequencies. One or more subwoofers avoid this compromise. Parametric EQ enables further tweaking of the low frequency modes to achieve the best overall system performance. As with Classe SSPs, the subwoofer(s) may be configured for use with some inputs and not others or engaged with different crossover frequencies/slopes as desired.

An updated 16x9 touchscreen and graphical user interface give the CP-800 a fresh new look to match its advanced feature set.

Devialet D-Premier reviewed in ToneAudio issue 35

Download Tone Audio #35, another stellar review of the ground-breaking Devialet D-Premier digital integrated amplifier.
"...Revolutionary engineering combined with short signal paths and minimal need for external cables all adds up to incredible sound that will have very broad appeal.  Cliche's aside, the D-Premier is more than the sum of its parts, in concept, performance, and value.  if you take advantage of all the functions it offers, I don't know how you could possibly acquire an amplifier, preamplifier, DAC, phono preamplifier, and music streamer for the cost of the D-Premier.  Of all the componets to which we have awarded our Exceptional Value Award, I can't think of one more deserving than the D-Premier."
If the hype is true, I'm feeling that one day I may just sell all my equipments (transport, digital interconnects, analog interconnects, DACs, preamps, amplifiers, etc) and just use Computer as source, stream to the D-premier which in turn driving a pair of world-class speakers like the Wilson Audio Sophia/Sasha or Magico Q3/Q5. I do not have to review anything anymore.  Hmm...that wouldn't be very fun, would it?

Nuforce Icon2 DAC+Integrated Amplifier

The NuForce Icon2 improved upon the original Icom and is now rated at 24-watts per channel driven into 4Ω (18-watts per channel when driving 8Ω loudspeakers) and has a high-performance DAC built in. It has stereo RCA inputs and a 3.5mm headphone output on the front panel.
iMac, Nuforce Icon2, and Amphion ion

The USB DAC inside the Icon2 is compatible with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 standards, able to operate at 32, 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz up to 24-bit (no 88.2!). The 3.5mm stereo headphone jack on the front panel can deliver 80mW into 16Ω headphones. There is also two more analog inputs one via normal RCA, another via 3.5mm mini jack.  It’s available in four different brushed aluminium finishes: Black, Silver, Red or Blue, for US$349.

In a fairly unusual move, NuForce has terminated the speaker terminals of the Icon2 with RJ45 connectors, so it also provides a pair of two-metre long RJ45-to-banana-plug speaker cables with each amplifier, these can be extended using CAT5 ethernet couplers.

Schitt Audio Valhalla

Not really a digital product, but if headphone amps are what you are looking for - a company with really funny name - Schitt Audio's Valhalla is quite serious looking and interesting.  It is a Class A, single-ended triode headphone amplifier with no overall feedback and noninverting circuit topology. It provides classic tube sound and can drive headphones with impedances as low as 32 ohms.

Tube sound is a smoky nightclub with a hot chick in a red dress, it's a warm swimming pool in summer, glowing green against the purple twilight, it's a... well, hell, you can't really explain tube sound. Think "smooth, fluid , liquid, alive. "But not in a SF-movie-gonna-eat-you kinda way. Valhalla delivers warm, magical sound for most headphones, as long as they aren't less than 32 ohms."

Specifications

  • Headphone Impedance: 32-600 ohms
  • Frequency Response: 10Hz-200KHz,-3dB
  • Maximum Output: 30V PP into 600 ohms

Birdland Audio aTVDAC

Designed as a companion to the new AppleTV.  The  aTVDAC  is a digital to analog converter with built-in integrated amplifier.  So you connect AppleTV's digital output to aTVDAC, and then connect you speakers. No details yet on output power (watt) or whether it can decode surround sound.

Problem with using AppleTV as streaming device is that it is limited to 16-bits so 24-bit files will be down-sampled.  However it converts everything to 48kHz (44.1 up, 96 down), so I am not sure why Birdland's product mock-up pic above shows 44k1.

Devialet D-Premier DAC+integrated amplifier

Once in a while something very fresh and original came along.  Devialet is a newish company based in Paris founded by ex-Nortel Networks engineers.

Digital amplification is not a new concept.  Digital switching amps (Class D) were invented decades ago, but only perfected recently by the likes of Bang&Olufsen (with its ICE power modules as used in amps by Bel Canto, Wired4Sound, etc), Nuforce, and others.  Direct digital input pulse width modulation (PWM) amps are less common but there are several good examples around (Tact/Lyngdorf, NAD M2).  What Devialet came up with, however, is quite unique and combine the best of both worlds.

Devialet calls its amp "Class ADH" where a small Class A amplifier directly coupled to the loudspeaker - tell the speakers how the analog waveform would look like, then another high efficiency Class D provides almost all of the current needed to drive the speakers.  The Amp is carved out of solid aluminum and weight 7kg and is designed to be driven digitally.  The digital to analog conversion happens very near the output stage and is as pure as it can be.  It uses, we 600 watt class D power supply with efficiency ratio of over 85%.  Idle power consumption is less than 5 watt.  Fully customizable configurations of RCA connectors, by using the website and save the config file on an SD card.

Early reviews from AVguide Absolute Sound, 6Moons, Hifi Choice, and Hifi-News and Record Review are saying the sound is extremely clean, dynamic, quiet and transparent.  The cost? $18,000 retail.
